2008 Banking Crisis
RBS suffered more than most UK banks during the 2008 banking crisis. Their aggressive expansion plans had seen them takeover numerous companies over a short period of time, however this left their balance sheet woefully thin and ensured they were at the forefront of the queue to receive taxpayer help. The Telegraph includes a comprehensive story on how RBS grew to the fifth largest bank in the world to seeing their share price almost wiped out.
There were more controversies for RBS however, including their former CEO being stripped of his knighthood, widespread criticism of the continued bonus scheme in the aftermath of the taxpayer bailout, and the years of loss making whilst the taxpayer remains a major shareholder.
RBS is still a huge bank
Despite their recent troubles RBS group remains a formidable force in both UK and global banking with a huge and diverse range of companies still within the group. For more information visit Royal Bank of Scotland Group on the Wikipedia website.
They also remain a huge presence on the high street, and as of 2016 the news from the company is that their turnaround plan is working and we will soon see RBS returning to the sizable profits they once made. This will be music to shareholders ears, as well as the taxpayer as they look to recover their investment.
